Law Centres reinventing themselves to survive

Tuesday, September 2nd 2014

Here at LCN we are often asked how Law Centres are faring following the Government cuts to civil legal aid. Catherine Baksi at the Law Society Gazette has published an article that provides a good summary of our position.

In essence, the sweeping cuts to legal aid have forced the closure of several Law Centres and have led others to re-examine the way they work. Exploration and innovation are the order of the day and, to ensure the sustainability of Law Centres for their communities. Inevitably, reduced resources mean reduced services, but remaining services are more targeted.

[The article mentions the Mary Ward Legal Centre, which is not a Law Centre. However, their experience does chime with that of our member Law Centres.]
